The DEVIL team met for its third annual meeting from 28 November to 1 December 2017. As the 3rd International Conference on Global Food Security took place in Cape Town, South Africa, this year, the DEVIL annual meeting was held in South Africa right before that Conference. The South African collaborators took the opportunity and invited their colleagues to the Wits Rural Facility near Acornhoek in the north east of South Africa.
Almost 20 researchers attended the third annual meeting and exchanged with all their collaborators from around the world. The team also took a field trip in the region around Acornhoek and learned about informal food markets. They met with a local farmer who took them on a trip from his food stand to his home garden and his farm. During the two and a half days, the six work packages updated each other on the progress made in the past year and discussed challenges and next steps. In the plenum or in smaller groups, the participants discussed further plans, set milestones and sketched ideas for the overall synthesis.
